Autonomous Ropeway

"AURO – Autonomous Ropeway Operation" is a technology developed by Doppelmayr that enables the fully automated operation of ropeways with no staff required on site: intelligent, networked sensors take over tasks that would traditionally be carried out by station staff, ensuring a maximum level of safety and availability. AURO Urban transfers this principle to use in densely built cities, opening up entirely new applications for the technology.

Building on AURO Alpin, a dedicated station concept for urban environments was developed by MOJA Design. Unlike alpine installations, urban stations need to fit architecturally into an existing, often historically grown cityscape while also enabling direct, intuitive connections to other modes of transport such as buses, trains, or bike- and car-sharing services. Because the stations, unlike many alpine installations, are freely accessible around the clock in public space, materials and construction were also specifically designed for high durability and resistance to vandalism.

Particular attention was paid to accessibility: the entire boarding area as well as the signage and colour concept were designed so that people with physical disabilities, wheelchair users, and parents with prams can also use the stations independently and safely. Large-scale glazing and a clear, reduced design language give the stations an open, inviting character while supporting good orientation within the building, even at high passenger volumes. The result is contemporary mobility hubs that combine sustainable urban public transport with architectural quality and have the potential to fundamentally change how cities connect their transport systems in the long term.
