BUGA Wuppertal
VR Experience
Communication design
An interactive virtual reality application was developed based on the feasibility study for the planned BUGA 31 cable car in Wuppertal. The goal of the project is to make the planning details vivid and spatially tangible for citizens. The VR application provides direct access to the plans and supports public communication about the project.
Drone imagery of the project area was captured to serve as the data foundation. The aerial images served as the basis for the digital recreation of the surroundings and enabled the planned structures to be realistically integrated into the existing landscape and urban space. This made it possible to accurately depict the stations and the route within their actual environment.
Based on this, a VR application was developed that allows users to virtually experience the planned cable car route—including the valley station, mid-station, and mountain station—from five selected vantage points. Users have the opportunity to explore the locations of the stations and understand how they fit into the surrounding landscape, as well as to view virtual perspectives from inside the cabin. These views allow users to look along the route between the stations and provide a vivid impression of the route’s course. Furthermore, the application illustrates the cable car’s function as an accessible connection between the central exhibition areas of BUGA 31.
The combination of drone data, digital visualizations, and VR technology has resulted in a powerful communication tool. The application complements the feasibility study with a clear representation of the planning and supports public participation by conveying complex spatial relationships in a way that is understandable and easy to follow.
